Kampala, Uganda: Despite the uncertainty surrounding US aid cuts, The AIDS Support Organization (TASO) remains steadfast in its commitment to providing essential services to individuals affected by HIV/AIDS in Uganda. Dr. Bernard Etukoit, TASO’s executive director, has reassured the public that the organization will continue to meet its obligations, thanks to funding from the Ugandan government and support from various development partners.

The recent Executive Order issued by US President Donald Trump has sparked concerns about the potential impact on organizations like TASO, which rely heavily on foreign aid. However, Dr. Etukoit is confident that TASO’s diversified funding streams will enable it to weather the storm. “We work with 18 organizations covering the whole country,” he explained. “This is a three-year project ending next year. On our part, we have complied with the Executive Order 100 percent.”

While 124 workers have been temporarily laid off due to the aid freeze, the remaining 300 staff members will continue to work on various projects funded by different donors. Dr. Etukoit noted that some projects are still in the negotiation phase, and the organization is committed to delivering specific services to the communities it serves.

TASO’s dedication to providing holistic care to individuals affected by HIV/AIDS is unwavering. The organization offers a range of services, including clinical care, counseling, and psychosocial support. With 78,000 individuals currently under its care, TASO is a vital lifeline for many Ugandans .

As the organization navigates the challenges posed by the US aid cuts, Dr. Etukoit remains optimistic about the future. “We have enough stock to last us at least until the end of March,” he said, reassuring patients that their treatment will not be disrupted.

TASO’s resilience in the face of uncertainty is a testament to Uganda’s commitment to supporting individuals affected by HIV/AIDS. As the organization continues to adapt to the changing landscape, one thing is clear: TASO will remain a beacon of hope for those in need.
