KALANGALA: The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has vowed to hold its elected leaders accountable for campaign promises as the party intensifies grassroots mobilisation efforts ahead of the June 24 Kalangala District Woman Member of Parliament by-election.
Speaking during a series of campaign meetings for NRM Woman MP candidate Idah Nabayiga in Kalangala District on Wednesday, NRM Director of Communication Emmanuel Lumala Dombo said the party would closely monitor the performance of all leaders elected on the NRM ticket.
“As a party, we shall demand accountability from all our elected leaders. We shall carry out assessments, and whoever is not performing as promised will face the consequences,” Dombo said.
He credited President Yoweri Museveni’s policies for the economic transformation witnessed in the island district, particularly in the fisheries and oil palm sectors.
Dombo said recent improvements in fish stocks were a direct result of the government’s crackdown on illegal fishing practices.
“I interacted with some fishermen and enquired from them whether the fish are back. They told me, yes, now we have fish. This is a result of Museveni’s wisdom in fighting illegal fishing,” he said.
He also highlighted the impact of the oil palm project in Kalangala, saying it has become a major source of income for local communities.
“The monthly Shs8 billion the island earns from oil palm cultivation is also a result of Museveni’s guidance. That money is put into circulation, and the locals benefit in various ways,” Dombo added.
The remarks came as senior NRM leaders continued a district-wide mobilisation campaign in support of Nabayiga, the party’s flagbearer in the Woman MP race.
The team, led by NRM Vice Chairperson for Buganda Region Haruna Kyeyune Kasolo, included Hon. Emmanuel Lumala Dombo, Electoral Commission Commissioner Amb. James Williams Kinobe and other district leaders.
On Wednesday, the delegation traversed several landing sites and held meetings with local leaders and residents at Nakatiba, Mabigo and Kyagalanyi, urging voters to rally behind Nabayiga.
The leaders said electing the NRM candidate would strengthen cooperation between the district and the central government and help accelerate service delivery and development programmes in the island district.
The ongoing mobilisation campaign is expected to continue across different islands as the party seeks to consolidate support ahead of next week’s poll.
