Kabalega Secondary School in Masindi district is seeking one billion shillings to reconstruct the dormitory, which was burnt by striking students in 2010.
The call was made by the school’s head teacher, Andrew Tumwesige, during the Kabalega Secondary School Old Boys’ Association (KASSOBA) three-day retreat at the school recently. Tumwesige said that the school administration has been making several calls since 2010 to the government following the burning of Bikunya house, but no positive result has been yielded.
He also cited inadequate space for the accommodation of the students, adding that they have a population of 6,500 students yet they can accommodate only 1,000.Tumwesige added that most buildings at the school are dilapidated and need face-lifting, adding that they are struggling with teachers’ accommodation where they are accommodating over 40 instead of the 23 teachers which the school is meant to accommodate.
Kabalega Secondary School is one of the traditional schools in Bunyoro, named after the famous king Kabalega. Speaking as the Chief Guest during the retreat, the Bunyoro Kingdom Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Andrew Byakutaga, challenged all old students in Bunyoro to join hands and support their former schools.
Byakutaga noted the kingdom will continue to support the transformation of its subjects through the provision of quality education from primary up to university level so that they can ably compete with other regions in the job market and in terms of development. The kingdom contributed 1,000,000 shillings towards KASSOBA.
