OYAM: North Kyoga Police PRO has issued a statement on Sunday on attempted murder, arson, injuring animals and malicious damage that took place in the district of Oyam.
The territorial police in Oyam District has rescued three suspected witch doctors who were alleged to have been behind witchcraft acts and poisoning cases registered in the area.
This follows a letter drafted on the 9th November 2023 by one Francis Okello Amuku the clan chief of Okarowok-Wibye Acel Clan.
Police noted that it was of the intention to organize a meeting on the 10th November,2023 at Anyeke Main Market.
However during the meeting it was alleged that the three confessed for having been behind the death of several people in the area.
This however angered people who took the law into their hands and attacked the three by beating them badly.
Police in Oyam District were informed and immediately the OC station with the team booked out and rescued them and rushed the victims to Anyeke Health Center IV for treatment while in critical conditions.
Police have identified the three namely; Omeny Cerisitino- 89-years old, a Lango by tribe peasant and a resident of Abutykwe Cell, Eastern ward Oyam Town Council in Oyam District.
Another person badly injuried is Adongo Dorina a -76-year old adult,a Lango by tribe , peasant and a resident of Abutikwe Cell Eastern ward, Oyam Town Council,in Oyam District.
Lastly is Acipa Catherine a 40 year-old woman,a Lango by tribe and a peasant of Abutikwe Cell Eastern Ward in Oyam Town Council in Oyam District.
Police spokesperson for North Kyoga Region SP Jimmy Patrick Okema stated that,as if that wasn’t enough, a group of people stormed the homes of the victims, caused destruction by setting houses on fire and injuring animals.
The scene was visited by the District CID, SOCO and was documented.
Meanwhile cases of attempted murder, Arson, injuring animals and malicious damage has been registered at Oyam CP.
However damages caused is yet to be established by the police . Okema added that suspects are still at large.
Police strongly condemn the action of the locals and encourage the leaders to embrace peace, love and unity amongst the community members.
Police has discourage the habit of taking suspects for a community court noting that it’s an act which is against the law and unacceptable.
Efforts to have the clan chief and other suspects arrested is still going on by police.
