Bunyoro battles to retain a breaking away community, see more

Bagungu is one of the strongest communities in Bunyoro kingdom settling around Lake Albert which has many times forced a break-up.The Lugungu speaking community claim that they possess a totally different cultural heritage from current mother ‘Bunyoro Kitara’ and therefore see no reason to be under it there by pushing for own “Obukama Bwa Bugungu”.Important to note.Bagungu community occupy Bunyoro areas of Buliisa, Masindi, part of Hoima and Democratic Republic of Congo.

Living along shores of Lake Albert commonly known as -in Runyoro-‘Enyanja Mwitanzige’, they do fishing as their major economic activity and less of farming.

Historically, their origin is not clear though some hypothesis indicate that they could have originated from Kagungu-a place in present day Republic Rwanda. and are believed to have been used used as a force to weaken the then King Kabalega.

Their intention to break away from the historical Kingdom of Bunyoro seem inevitable as it is now almost a song to every ‘Mugungu’ (a person from Bagungu community).

Amidst all this, Mr. Andrew Kirungi Byakutaga, the Premier (Omuhikirwa) of Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom pledged to neutralize the move.

He told President Museveni yesterday that the wave is being forced by external elements who want to compromise the unity of the kingdom.

“Bunyoro Kitara kingdom shall not accept this proposed secession by the Bagungu community who are being misled by opportunists who have selfish interests,” PM Byakutaga added.

In his response to the row, Uganda’s President Museveni vowed to intervene and settle the matter.

  1. Let the president allow bagungu community to breakaway because they are totally different from banyoro. The reason why munyoro can’t speak lugungu.

  2. Bagungu as community we have not benefited anything from Bunyoro kitara kingdom so our hearts are in pains. What pm Byakutage Andrew is saying is nothing to our community. And the few Bagungu in administration of Bunyoro kitara kingdom don’t even know our problems and are not residents of Buliisa much as they are Bagungu.
