In an effort to enhance the protection and welfare of older persons in Uganda, the government has announced the disbursement of 5 billion shillings to 520 verified groups of individuals aged 60-79 years. This initiative, known as the Social Enterprise Grant for Older Persons (SEGOP), aims to provide support to older individuals who are not covered under the Social Assistance Grant for Empowerment (SAGE) program.
Dominic Mafwabi, the State Minister for Elderly Affairs, stated that the funds will benefit a total of 5,400 individuals who are members of the 520 enterprise groups located in various districts across the country. The disbursement of funds through SEGOP will enable older persons to engage in income-generating activities and improve their economic well-being.
Mafwabi emphasized the government’s commitment to promoting healthy and dignified aging, ensuring that all elderly persons in the country can lead elevated lives. The comprehensive social protection system, in collaboration with various stakeholders, aims to address the needs and challenges faced by older persons and create an enabling environment for their well-being.
By providing financial support through SEGOP, the government recognizes the importance of empowering older persons to actively participate in economic activities, contribute to their communities, and maintain their independence. This initiative not only improves their financial situation but also enhances their sense of dignity and self-worth.
The disbursement of funds to verified groups of older persons demonstrates the government's recognition of the valuable contribution older individuals make to society. It also highlights the government’s commitment to ensuring that older persons are included in social protection programs and have access to the necessary support systems.
In conclusion, the government of Uganda’s allocation of 5 billion shillings through the Social Enterprise Grant for Older Persons (SEGOP) to 520 enterprise groups is a significant step towards promoting the well-being and economic empowerment of older individuals. This initiative will contribute to creating a comprehensive social protection system that supports older persons in leading healthy and dignified lives.
By investing in their economic activities, the government acknowledges the valuable role older persons play in society and aims to enhance their overall quality of life.
