Uganda Cranes won’t travel back abroad to play their home games, according to State for Sports Minister Peter Ogwang.
The Cranes’ home match against Tanzania in the ongoing AFCON 2023 qualifier took place in Egypt. This came after the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the continent’s governing body of football, declared that Uganda’s stadiums were ineligible to host international matches.
Many Ugandans were confused by the announcement, wondering why the government hadn’t taken action to upgrade the nation’s sporting facilities.
Last year, the government officially handed over the renovation duties of Namboole Stadium to the UPDF Engineering Brigade. But it’s not yet specified when the renovations will be completed.
Minister Ogwang, however, asserts that the stadium will be open by June 12.
“The game against Algeria will be played here in Namboole Stadium on 12th June. That is my promise to Ugandans,” he said.
