Kampala, Uganda: Uganda’s Principal of Nationala Unity Platform and the leading Opposition Political Party in Uganda Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu has this afternoon elogised the fallen Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI who passed away today.
Taking to his twitter Account, Mr. Kyagulanyi tweeted; ‘Saddened by the death of Pope Benedict XVI. His reign as leader of the Catholic Church touched the lives of countless people around the world and left behind a legacy of service, piety and devotion. I send condolences to the Church and all Catholics. May his soul rest in peace’.
Former Pope Benedict XVI died at his Vatican residence, aged 95, almost a decade after he stood down because of ailing health.
He led the Catholic Church for less than eight years until, in 2013, he became the first Pope to resign since Gregory XII in 1415.
Benedict spent his final years at the Mater Ecclesiae monastery within the walls of the Vatican.
His successor Pope Francis said he had visited him there frequently.
The Vatican said in a statement: “With sorrow I inform you that the Pope Emeritus, Benedict XVI, passed away today at 9:34 in the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery in the Vatican.
This comes a day after Uganda Police disrupted end of year prayers where he had been joined Rtd. Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye- the four-time Presidential aspirant in Uganda.
