Jacob Oboth Oboth elected Speaker of Uganda’s Parliament

Kampala – Jacob Markson Oboth Oboth has been elected Speaker of Uganda’s 12th Parliament after securing a decisive majority in a vote held in Kampala.

Mr Oboth Oboth, the Minister of State for Defence and MP for West Budama South, received 441 votes. He defeated Paul Mwiru, who polled 60 votes, and Norbert Mao, who received 15. Three ballots were declared spoilt.

The election took place as MPs convened to choose the leadership of the next Parliament. Mr Oboth Oboth’s victory positions him to preside over legislative business at a time when the House is expected to focus on service delivery, accountability, and economic empowerment.

He has served in various parliamentary and ministerial roles and is widely regarded for his legal background and experience in governance and defence affairs.

The Speaker’s role in Uganda includes moderating debates, maintaining order in the House, and representing Parliament in engagements with the Executive and the public.
