MakBME Participates in Launch of National Medical Equipment Guidelines

The Department of Biomedical Engineering at Makerere University (MakBME) was honored to participate in the official launch of the National Medical Equipment Guidelines, held at Skyz Hotel in Kampala. This landmark event marked a significant step forward in strengthening the regulation, management, and use of medical equipment within Uganda’s healthcare system.

MakBME was represented by Dr. Robert Ssekitoleko, who attended in his dual capacity as Vice President of the Uganda National Association of Medical and Hospital Engineers (UNAMHE) and Head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Makerere University. His participation highlighted the department’s ongoing commitment to national health technology development and policy formulation.

The newly launched guidelines are essential in improving the entire lifecycle of medical equipment—from planning and procurement to maintenance and decommissioning. By standardizing processes and establishing clear roles and responsibilities, the guidelines aim to enhance the efficiency, safety, and sustainability of medical equipment use in health facilities across the country.

The event brought together key stakeholders from the Ministry of Health, development partners, professional bodies, and academic institutions, all reaffirming a shared commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery through better equipment management and biomedical engineering capacity.
