Uganda’s National Resistance Movement (NRM) and Kenya’s ruling party, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to promote political cooperation.

The two friendly parties led by NRM Secretary General Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong and his UDA counterpart, Senator Hassan Omar entered the Saturday agreement after days of dialogue that centered on how to forge cordial relations.

Speaking during a meeting with the visiting delegation at the NRM headquarters, Mr Todwong said the agreement would enable the two parties to consolidate relations and work together in exploring new ways to enhance ties.

“Guided by this memorandum of understanding, our party-to-party relations will have a more in-depth development,” Todwong said, adding the pact would see the two parties increase high-level exchange visits and sharing experiences.

“We very much cherish the friendship with our Kenyan neighbors. We view Kenya as a reliable friend and good partner,” he said.

Omar said his party was interested in further developing its relations with NRM and understanding its strategies on how they have managed to consolidate their stay in leadership for close to four decades.

“We came here on a mission to search for knowledge, ideas, and share experiences on how we can move forward as brothers in Uganda and Kenya and progressively towards the realization of the East African Federation,” Sen. Omar said.

“These two sister countries can never be separated no matter the problems they have between them because we share many similarities.”

Maj. Pollar Awich, the NRM’s Director for External Affairs, said as the ruling party they were happy to host and share experiences with their neighbors.

“We have learnt a lot from the discussions we had and hope to integrate them into our operations,” Awich said.

The meeting was also attended by Members of the NRM Central Executive Committee (CEC) including, Hon Lydia Wanyoto, the Party Women’s League Chairperson, Hon James Tweheyo, Chairperson Workers League, and Directors; Hon Emmanuel Dombo (Communications) and Counsel Enoch Barata (Legal Affairs) among other Party leaders.

The UDA delegation will return home tomorrow after their six-day interesting tour. On Friday, the team had an opportunity to meet and hold discussions with the NRM National Chairman and President Gen (Rtd) Yoweri Kaguta Museveni at State House, Entebbe.
