POLITICS: Uganda’s Senior Presidential Advisor on Special Operations and the First Son General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has finally expressed aspirations to stand for president in 2026.
Taking to his Twitter Account, he said.
Kainerugaba, who is the son of President Yoweri Museveni and nephew of Gen Salim Saleh, has been critical of the old generation of leaders who have been in power for decades. He argued that the presidency of the nation should be reserved for young men and women who can lead the country into the future.
“The Prime Minister of the UK is 42 years old, and the Prime Minister of Finland is 37 years. Some of us are hitting 50 years old. We are tired of waiting forever. We will take a stand! Fidel Castro, my HERO, became President at 32 years. I’m about to hit 49 years old. It’s really not right. The Presidency of the nation is meant for young men. How many agree with me that our time has come? Enough of the old people ruling us. Dominating us. It’s time for our generation to shine. Retweet and like,” he tweeted.
“You have wanted me to say it forever! Okay, in the name of Jesus Christ my God, in the name of all the young people of Uganda and the world and in the name of our great revolution, I will stand for the Presidency in 2026!” he said in a tweet.
Kainerugaba, who is a former UPDF commander of land forces and the commander of the elite Special Forces Command (SFC), has been using his movement, the MK, to endear himself to the electorate. He described his movement as a nationalist, non-sectarian, progressive, democratic, and Pan-Africanist organization that believes in all the people of Uganda and Africa.
The First Son, who has been openly critical of members of his father’s party, the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), also claimed that there is no opposition in Uganda. “There is only truth and lies! The time for the people to choose between them is fast approaching,” he tweeted.
Kainerugaba, who has previously denied having any presidential ambitions, has enjoyed a rapid rise through Uganda’s army ranks. His announcement has sparked speculation about the future of the ruling NRM, which has been in power since 1986 when Museveni shot his way to State House through guerrilla warfare.
The First Son’s announcement also comes at a time when Uganda is grappling with rising levels of corruption and economic stagnation. Kainerugaba has pledged to end corruption and rebuild the country, stating that the nonsense of certain people stealing our people’s wealth because they are ‘Connected’ will cease forever.
“Tomorrow, the NONSENSE of certain people stealing our people’s wealth because they are ‘Connected’ will cease forever! We shall rebuild our country and indeed rehabilitate it from the ravages of Corruption!” Muhoozi said.
