The suspects, Kanyesigye Odongo Odamal, Arinatwe Anthony, Tumwesigye Arnold, Arinaitwe Elijah, Asiimwe Joshua, Tumushabe Wilber, and Twesigye Lawrence, were remanded to Ntungamo prison and Kabale remand home respectively.
During their court appearance before Ntungamo grade one magistrate, Namubiru Mariam, the suspects were charged with murder, attempted murder, arson, and malicious damage.
The charges stem from an incident on February 26th, 2023, when the prime suspect, Tumushabe Wilber, and his friends caused the death of a student named Atukwase Bonus.
They are also charged with three counts of attempted murder, one count of arson, and malicious damage of 196 beds valued at Ugx 457,000,000 (Four hundred fifty-seven million).
The Rwizi Regional Police Spokesperson, ASP Samson Kasasira, stated that the police arrested the suspects after being named by their colleagues.
It is alleged that Tumushabe collaborated with the other suspects to deliver petrol to the school on the night of February 26th, 2023.
The same fuel was used to light a fire that destroyed Nyerere and Mandela dormitories, housing 146 students, and leaving one student dead and three others with nursing injuries.
The suspects will appear in court again on March 27th, 2023, to hear their charges. This is a serious offence, and the court proceedings will determine the fate of the seven suspects.
