Kansanga, Uganda: On Wednesday, 15th , February/2023, International University of East Africa ( IUEA) will grace the function of Installation of the 2nd Chancellor.
It is against this background that the Vice Chancellor of the University penned down an invitation letter to Staff and Student fraternity to this function.
In his polite words, Vice Chancellor wrote;
Dear Esteemed Students and Staff:
Greetings from the International University of East Africa (IUEA).
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, University Council and management, I want to officially inform you that IUEA will install its second Chancellor on Wednesday 15th February 2023.
As students and as academic and admin staff, you are all invited to this very important event. The new Chancellor is Ambassador, Dr. Amina Chawahir Mohamed.
Since the 15th is a Wednesday, all classes will be cancelled and in lieu of classes, attendance at the installation is mandatory for students and staff.
Please come out in full force to welcome and install our new Chancellor.
Breakfast, Meet and Greet the Chancellor, music and Lunch will be served. The installation is a formal academic event, much like a graduation so academic gown will be provided.
A tentative order of ceremony is provided as an attachment to this letter. A date and time for pick-up of academic gown will be communicated.
The installation will take place in the main auditorium at the university’s main campus in Kansanga, Kampala.
Ms. Mohamed will be IUEA’s second Chancellor. She is proceeded by IUEA’s founding Chancellor, the late Professor Emmanuel Tumusiime-Mutebile who passed on in January 2022. Professor Mutebile, served as Chancellor from 2010 to January 2022.
Ms. Amina Chawahir Mohamed Jibril is a prominent lawyer, diplomat and politician who has a passion for education. She also has immense national, regional and international leadership experience.
She served as the Cabinet Secretary for Sports in Kenya. She previously served as chairwoman of the International Organization for Migration and the World Trade Organization’s General Council, as well as Assistant Secretary-General and Deputy Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme.
She served as the Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kenya from May 2013 to February 2018, when His Excellency, President Uhuru Kenyatta, after re-election, moved her to the Education Ministry. In March 2019, she was moved to the Sports Ministry.
Ms. Mohamed spent her childhood in Amalemba, Kakamega, Kenya, where she developed a passion for reading and for international relations. For her elementary studies, Mohamed attended the Township Primary School in Kakamega and later Butere Girls and Highlands Academy.
Upon graduation, Ms. Mohamed moved to Ukraine on a scholarship to study at the University of Kiev. She completed the
Institution’s courses, earning a Master of Laws (LLM) in international law. She later obtained a postgraduate diploma (PGDip) in international relations from the University of Oxford.
Through a Fellowship at the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), she also followed several training courses on international law.
Ms. Mohamed is multilingual, she speaks Somali as well as English, Russian and Swahili, with a working knowledge of French. Some of Ms. Mohamed’s background include Legal advisor roles as a legal officer at the Kenyan Ministry of Local Government. UN Ambassador, between 2000 and 2006, Ms. Mohamed worked as the Ambassador and Permanent Representative for the Kenya diplomatic mission in Geneva.
Ministry of Justice, she was Secretary of the Ministry of Justice and the UN Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs. Africa Union Commission Chair Campaign: In 2017, Ms. Mohamed was nominated by Kenyan president, His Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta, to be chair of the African Union Commission (AUC).
Cabinet Secretary for Education: On 26 January 2018, President Kenyatta appointed Amina s to be the Education Cabinet Secretary for his second term. Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Heritage and Culture: and Nomination for Director-General of the World Trade Organization. Ms. Mohamed was International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Member of the Ethics Commission.
