A 4.9 moderate magnitude earthquake hit the border areas of South Sudan and Uganda on Monday evening. Confirmed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the quake struck at 9:54pm near Yei in Central Equatoria state, some 36 km North of Yumbe district in the Northern Region, Uganda. The quake hit the area at a shallow depth of 8.4 km and didn’t cause significant damage. Police in the Kiira region confirmed the detention of 35 suspects arrested for their involvement in various criminal behavior during the Nyege-Nyege festival held from November 9th to 12th, 2023. The suspects have been screened and are currently held at Jinja City’s Nalufenya police station, awaiting further prosecution in the courts of law. At least 20 cases of phone theft and one case of car theft were reported to Jinja police station during the four-day Nyege Nyege festival in Jinja district, according to police. Police in Rukiga district have arrested two suspects for questioning over the death of 40-year-old Martin Tumwekwase, a resident of Kasoni cell in Rwenyangi Parish, Kamwezi sub-county, Rukiga district.
