A 61-year-old traditional birth attendant in Mbale District, eastern Uganda, has been arrested by the police following the death of a 27-year-old woman, Brenda Namakoye, who sought her services during labor. Namakoye, a mother of three from Nasenyi village in Butaleja District, died due to excessive bleeding after delivering a baby at Ms. Florence Kakai’s home in Luyekhe village in Mbale District. The Minister of State for Finance (General Duties), Henry Musasizi has revealed plans by Government to impose a time frame of six months within which money lenders are meant to impose interest rates because capping interest rates isn’t good economics. “We know that some money lenders charge interest of more than 100% of the amount of the loan. Authorities have arrested at least 14 students from St. Barnabas Secondary School in Karujanga, Katuna town council, Kabale District, for their alleged involvement in an attempt to set fire to the school premises.
