Uganda’s opposition lead by National Unity Platform has welcomed the sanctions recently imposed by the United States government on the Commissioner General of Prisons, Dr. Johnson Byabashaija. Last week, Byabashaija was sanctioned by the US Department of Treasury over allegations of torture of prisoners. A light aircraft carrying soldiers of Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officers has crashed in the Kiunga area of Lamu county. Two pilots, seven KDF officers, and one police officer were injured during the accident. A viral video shows the light aircraft engulfed in flames. Preliminary reports indicate that the plane was ascending from the Kiunga airstrip when it hit electricity poles and crashed, bursting into flames and burning beyond recognition. The 5th Division Court Martial has dismissed some of the soldiers who were seen in a viral video clip flogging a suspect accused of stealing a motorcycle. Corporal Richard Burton Odong Otto, the then Lagot Detach Commander, and Privates Sunday Mungu Acel, Dennis Ogwang, and Martin Henry Omara were charged with aggravated torture.
