The United States government on Thursday announced it will gift Kenya 16 refurbished helicopters to bolster the country’s security operations. According to a statement issued by the White House, the 16 helicopters will include 16 Huey choppers and 8 MD-500s. Despite the agreement, Kenya will formally receive the US-manufactured helicopters between late 2024 and mid-2025. The helicopters are set to be used to enhance Kenya’s ability to provide regional peace and security to help Kenya in peace-keeping missions. President Nangolo Mbumba has received a courtesy visit from Chief Justice Luke Malaba of the Republic of Zimbabwe, accompanied by Chief Justice Peter Shivute. President Mbumba and the two Chief Justices concurred that the meeting was necessary in order to exchange views, ideas, and expertise to better the administration of justice for both judiciaries. President Mbumba further noted that there is a need to lay a strong foundation for the benefit of future generations.

Julen Lopetegui has been appointed the new West Ham head coach. Lopetegui replaces David Moyes, who departed his role at the London Stadium “by mutual consent” after his contract expired at the end of the Premier League season. Russia has begun the first stage of tactical nuclear weapons drills, involving Iskander and Kinzhal missiles, in areas bordering Ukraine. The Russian Ministry of Defense said on Tuesday that the drills were taking place in its Southern Military District, which borders and includes parts of Ukraine that Moscow has occupied and illegally annexed since its full-scale invasion began in February 2022. The ministry did not give the exact location of the exercises. Belarus, where Russia said last year, it was deploying tactical nuclear weapons, is also expected to take part. The Office of the Inspectorate of Government – IGG has embarked on a program to recruit and deploy community volunteers to assist in the fight against corruption. The Inspectorate is targeting to recruit more than 4000 community monitors with at least 10 from each parish. A prominent Malian economist and professor has been sentenced to two years in jail, one of which was suspended, for his criticism of the military junta. Étienne Fakaba Sissoko was also ordered to pay a fine of 3m CFA francs ($4,900; £3,900). The 41-year-old academic, who has been in custody since March, was charged with defamation and damaging the state’s reputation by distributing fake news.
