At around 8am, the deadly fire gutted the building located along Luwum street Kampala, leaving many business owners counting losses as their properties were set ablaze.
However, one of the survivors captured attention of many after he appeared bare-chested with only a towel on, as he watched on while the firefighters combated the flames.
Pictures of him bare-chested went viral on social media, with many suggesting he had been in a lodge having a good time at the time of the fireoutbreak.
However, the man who has identified himself as Johnny Jones has dismissed the claims as untrue, saying he had only been in his living room at the time of the fire incident.
“That’s the place I stay. That’s my home. I have been living there since 1982. That’s my father’s house. I was not in a lodge. That’s my place. That’s where I stay.” he told a local television station.
“I saw a lot of smoke at my door. When I saw the fire, I just jumped out in my towel. The smoke covered me, I just jumped out. I could’nt see,” he added.
On Monday, Luke Owoyesigyire, the deputy spokesperson Kampala Metropolitan confirmed that the fire incident left one dead.
He said police had kicked off investigations to ascertain the cause of the fire.
“An immediate investigation has been initiated to determine the precise cause of the fire. The findings of this investigation will be promptly communicated to the public.” Owoyesigyire assured.
