The Kampala University Vice-Chancellor Owek.Amb.Al-haj Prof.Badru Kateregga urged the Muslim Teachers under their umbrella body UMTA-(Uganda Muslim Teachers’ Association) to work hard and create wealth to avoid a miserable retirement. This was during the end-of-year UMTA Dinner organized at Fairway Hotel in Kampala on 2nd December 2023.
Prof.Kateregga who also doubles as the Chief Scout of Uganda encouraged teachers to be rich, “Musomesa tolina kuba mwavu”, run away from poverty, how can you be with knowledge and you claim to be poor. He encouraged teachers to invest and reap profits.
He urged teachers to stop resisting transfers; when you are transferred to another school don’t refuse because the moment you accept to be a Public servant, that is a Public job and it’s not a hereditary job and where you’re going it’s not a hereditary School, so if you have been changed move quickly to your new duty station and after, maybe you can plead later, Prof.Kateregga said.
He informed teachers to plan for retirement to avoid a miserable life and notified them that Kampala University is designing a curriculum for retirement management that will help retiring officers plan for the next phase of life.
He also encouraged teachers to embrace the digital era, because a lot has changed and they have to move with the changing world.
The KU Don said, “Technology will not replace teachers, but teachers who will not embrace technology, will be replaced by those who will embrace technology”.
The Dinner was graced by Prince Dr.Kassim Nakibinge(Chief Guest) who also doubles as the Patron of UMTA.
In his remarks, he said that since UMTA has successfully managed to go through the challenges it had before, now he has much confidence in it. Members you should focus on what brings you together, have more cohesion, don’t fight one another and be professional in whatever they do, Prince emphasized.
We shall try to work with you, as much as you want to work with us so that we make this world a better place, Dr. added.
He also said that one of the cardinal objectives of UMTA should be working on economic issues, see how best you can get empowerment in that area so that you always push your agenda internally without support from elsewhere, and that will be the critical success factor for UMTA on top of bringing you together and working together.
The Chairman of UMTA Haji Mpungu who doubles as the Head teacher of Masaka SS, thanked members for making the function a success. The event was attended by teachers from different parts of Uganda.
