The main goal of most smugglers is the “get-rich-quick” mission. They completely ignore the risks involved with smuggling and keep trying their luck. I am sure this is the same reasoning the smugglers recently caught in Mutukula had.
From intelligence reports, they were repetitive offenders who often used porous routes through Mutukula to find their way to Kampala.
Unfortunately, last Friday, their tricks could not match the URA surveillance operations. They were netted and their consolidation stores were busted in a very tight operation that involved area Chairperson and Police that forced open their stores. Here, they had continuously piled their smuggled goods.
Speaking on the goods that were intercepted, Moses Ankunda a Customs Officer in the region noted that they recovered assorted items to include;132 cartons of santa lucia spaghetti,338 cartons of Afro care petroleum jelly and 56 cartons of Azam wheat flour.
“We hired a truck as goods couldn’t fit on our enforcement pickup and finally made it to our station warehouse to commence on offense management process,” Ankunda said on how much was receovered.
URA encourages the General Public to report to URA all suspicious trade practices in their areas to enable URA create a level trading ground for all legitimate Traders.
