We are thrilled to announce to you the rolling out of the Emerging Leaders Program. The orientation workshop will be held from the 19th to the 21st of October 2023. The workshop, implemented by LIFE Ministry Uganda and The Global Leadership Summit was curated to target Makerere University teaching staff and all University student leaders. All together a select few, 185 participants involving 60 lecturers and 125 student leaders have gathered at Esella Country Hotel.
Background of the Emerging Leaders Program
On 2nd February 2023, The First Lady and Honorable Minister of Education and Sports, Hon. Janet Kataaha Museveni inaugurated the Makerere University Council, where she asked the Council to join her and implement a national Anti-Corruption and HIV/AIDS Campaign, starting with Makerere University in the bid to raise a dignified generation of youth in Uganda.
A program dubbed, “The Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) has been developed to see the vision of the First Lady, Hon. Janet Kataaha Museveni come to life. The ELP will be implemented first, at Makerere University in partnership with LIFE Ministry Uganda and The Global Leadership Summit and later across all universities in the country. The program is a life skills program, aiming to foster character mindset change at this great University, to influence the present and shape the future of our nation.
The Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) is an overarching program that will encompass The ELP three-day orientation workshop, The ELP Leaders Capacity Building Program, and an accompanying behavioral change campaign; Coded – The SAFE Campaign.
- The ELP three-day orientation workshop: The three—day orientation workshop has been organized to introduce the Emerging Leaders Program, an initiative of the First Lady, Hon. Janet Kataaha Museveni, to give participants exposure to the program content with the aim of enlisting them as one of the program participants/implementors during its course of implementation.
- The Emerging Leaders Capacity Building: The training will be held early in Quarter one of 2024 to equip Guild leaders and lecturers with the necessary skills to take on the program and create ownership in implementation. The training will be founded on a life skills and character development curriculum with six (6) units and thirty (30) lessons, taught in a 5-day training workshop.
- The SAFE Campaignis a series of innovative lifestyle and communication interventions aiming to improve the knowledge, motivation, and risk perceptions, skills, norms, and supportive environment of morality and integrity, correspondingly transforming the University’s outputs on Education and Economic development.
Objectives of the Program
- To promote positive character development through life skills and character education.
- To equip students with skills and knowledge on values-based lifestyles to enable healthy behavioral choices.
- To train trainers to facilitate the Emerging Leaders program within the University.
- To raise awareness amongst students about the need to reach out to their communities in light of combating corruption, HIV/AIDS, substance and internet abuse among other challenges.
Expected Outcomes
The following outcomes are expected as a result of the Program:
- The university student body and staff are exposed to the values of integrity and servant leadership.
- Students and the academic staff, are equipped to model and build a culture of integrity within the university community and the nation at large.
- Increased awareness of and commitment to character transformation within and beyond the gates of Makerere University.
