Hundreds have gathered at the Airfield in Kasese Municipality, Kasese District, to receive Charles Mumbere, the King of Rwenzururu. Crowds started forming as early as 8am, but security measures restricted their access to the field, leading people to line up along the roadside as they eagerly awaited the King’s arrival.
King Mumbere had been absent from the Rwenzururu Kingdom since the violent events of November 2016, when he was arrested during a security raid on his palace in Kasese town alongside his royal guards. This homecoming was highly anticipated by his loyal subjects.
As the morning progressed, residents of Rwenzururu converged on the Kasese airfield. The atmosphere was described as electric by KFM’s Alex Ashaba, with energetic men playing traditional drums and instruments, filling the air with rhythms reflecting the excitement in people’s hearts.
The town came alive with many cultural performances, the sounds of traditional music resonating alongside joyful voices of both the elderly and youth.
Vendors also took advantage of the event, selling items like flyers, t-shirts, and photo frames featuring King Mumbere.
Beyond the airfield, some people secured seats at the Golf Course along Kilembe Road in Kasese town, where the King is scheduled to address his people shortly after landing.
The eagerly awaited address is set to begin at 1pm.
