Kampala, Uganda: During the Annual Thanksgiving and Dedication Service for Journalists, Mr. Frank Gashumba, Chairman of the Council for Abavandimwe, emphasized the importance of seeking God’s safety in the election season. Gashumba, a friend to journalists, reminded them to adhere to the principles of pure journalism, avoiding activism that often leads to clashes with security agencies.

Gashumba acknowledged the challenges faced by journalists, including non-payment by media houses, and encouraged them to explore entrepreneurial ventures to ensure a steady income. He also expressed concern over the credibility of the journalism profession, citing the presence of “masqueraders” who undermine the integrity of the field.

He sympathized with Ibrah Miracle, a TOP TV journalist who was recently battered by security agencies. Gashumba called for the establishment of a fund to support journalists in similar situations and stressed the importance of prioritizing their safety above all else.

He also urged journalists to remain patriotic and committed to their profession. He reminded them that their work plays a critical role in shaping the nation’s narrative and promoting democratic values.

As the country navigates the election season, the importance of a free and independent press cannot be overstated.
