Kampala, Uganda: Hon. Nakafeero Flavia, the aspiring Wakiso District Woman MP, has outlined a comprehensive plan to enhance water transportation safety and promote economic empowerment for women in Wakiso’s island communities on Lake Victoria.
At the heart of her proposal is the introduction of boat-making initiatives specifically designed for women. This innovative approach aims to not only improve transportation links between the islands but also provide women with a valuable economic opportunity.
To ensure water safety, Hon. Nakafeero Flavia has proposed several key initiatives:
Provision of Life Jackets & Safety Gear; Prioritizing vulnerable groups such as women, children, and the elderly, the initiative will provide life jackets, safety gear, and flotation devices. Collaboration with marine suppliers will ensure affordable and durable life jackets.
Training of Local Boat Operators;Â Boat operators will undergo training in basic first aid, life-saving techniques, and water rescue methods. Regular safety inspections will also be conducted to ensure compliance with safety standards.
Safe Docking Stations & Infrastructure; The construction of safe docking stations with covered shelters, first aid kits, and emergency evacuation plans will provide a secure environment for passengers. Comprehensive emergency response plans will also be developed for boat accidents.
Collaboration with Government & NGOs; Hon. Nakafeero Flavia emphasized the importance of working with government bodies, such as the Ministry of Works and Transport and Uganda Maritime Authority, to enforce water transport regulations and safety standards. Partnerships with NGOs focused on disaster risk management and water safety will also provide additional support.
By introducing these initiatives, Hon. Nakafeero Flavia aims to transform the lives of women and communities living on Wakiso’s islands.
