Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago is currently undergoing specialized treatment in Nairobi, Kenya. He was rushed there in severe pain over the Easter weekend.
Doctors discovered a bulging disc in his neck pressing on nerves after an MRI scan in Kampala. This caused excruciating neck pain and paralysis in his left arm.
At Nairobi Hospital, tests confirmed the swollen disc and doctors have scheduled surgery to remove it. The procedure called an anterior cervical discectomy and fusion, will relieve pressure on his spinal cord and nerves.
The surgery involves removing the swollen disc and replacing it with a bone graft secured by a metal plate.
This isn’t Lukwago’s first trip to Nairobi for medical attention. He was rushed there twice in 2020 and 2021 after suffering a severe allergic reaction, with some suspecting poisoning at the time.
