KAMPALA: The Uganda Police Force has obtained CCTV footage revealing the assassin responsible for shooting at Pastor Aloysius Bugingo’s vehicle on January 2 in Namungoona, a Kampala suburb, resulting in the tragic death of his bodyguard, Richard Muhumuza.
As per the footage analysis, a figure clad in a black jacket and white shoes is seen shooting towards Pastor Bugingo’s vehicle. The assailant seemed to target the co-driver’s seat, possibly under the assumption that Bugingo, as the principal figure, occupied that position.
“The CCTV footage captured the lone gunman in action,” said a security source who preferred anonymity to avoid jeopardising ongoing investigations.
“After firing several bullets, the gunman quickly hid his pistol before fleeing from the crime scene,” the source added.
The CCTV footage also captures the moment the gunman vanishes into the cover of darkness, creating a scene of chaos as bystanders scatter to evade the gunfire.
When questioned about the identification of the assailant, a senior official revealed that the footage is not sufficiently clear; it exhibits graininess and low quality, complicating the process.
In response to the challenging visuals, the police announced a bounty of Shs 20 million on Monday, encouraging individuals with information leading to the apprehension of the gunman and the recovery of the weapon. Notably, the suspect’s photo has not been shared.
Fred Enanga, the police spokesperson, affirmed the commencement of a meticulous investigation by the dedicated team at the Special Investigations Division.
Fred Enanga stated, “We’ve gathered witness statements, obtained relevant reports, accessed CCTV footage from both public and private cameras, and secured forensic and ballistic reports for evaluation.”
Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Senior Presidential Advisor in Charge of Special Operations, echoed the urgency for law enforcement agencies to swiftly investigate and bring the criminals to justice.
Expressing concern, Gen. Muhoozi questioned the identity of the perpetrators, pondering whether it could be the ADF or another elusive group, emphasizing the need for answers on the X platform on Wednesday, January 3, 2024.
“Who are these criminals? Is it the ADF or some other shadowy group? We need answers to these questions,” Gen. Muhoozi wondered.
