Kyankwanzi, 16th June, 2026: President Yoweri Museveni this afternoon officially opened the Cabinet Induction Retreat at the National Leadership Institute, Kyankwanzi, tasking ministers and government leaders with driving Uganda’s socio-economic transformation.
Addressing the retreat, the President reminded leaders that the historical role of the National Resistance Movement and post-Independence African leadership is to shift citizens from poverty to prosperity.
“We cannot continue to have people trapped in subsistence production,” Museveni said. “Our mission is to move every household into the money economy through commercial agriculture, manufacturing, services and ICT.”
He emphasized that leaders have a duty to guide citizens toward wealth creation, value addition, and prosperity. According to the President, government programs and policies must be judged by one benchmark: the growth of a strong middle class and a skilled working class.
“That is the benchmark by which leadership should be judged,” he told the Cabinet.
The Kyankwanzi induction retreat brings together Cabinet members to align on government priorities, service delivery, and strategies for implementing the National Development Plan. Wealth creation and moving homesteads into commercial production have remained central themes of the NRM’s governance agenda.
