Mak Fosters Academic Excellence through Cutting-Edge Pedagogy and Professionalism Training

Kampala, Uganda: Makerere University has taken a significant step towards enhancing academic excellence through the successful completion of Phase II of the Pedagogy and Professionalism Course. The comprehensive 3-day training, held from February 19-21, 2025, was facilitated by the Centre for Learning and Teaching Support, housed at the College of Education and External Studies.

Fifty Academic Staff members, representing all 10 colleges with five participants each, actively engaged and completed the training. The primary objective of the course was to enhance the skills of Academic Staff in competence-based education, equipping them to excel in the ever-evolving academic landscape.

 

Professor Buyinza Mukadasi, Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic Affairs at Makerere University, emphasized the importance of continuous learning and professional development in academia. He commended the efforts of the Centre for Teaching and Learning Support and the facilitators of the Pedagogy and Professionalism Course.

Prof. Mukadasi stressed that the world is rapidly changing, and academics must adapt to emerging technologies and innovations.

He added that this kind of training will be scaled up to the entire University so that all the academic Staff are equiped with these skills.

Associate Professor Mathias Mulumba, Dean of the School of Education, who represented the Principal College of Education and External studies highlighted the need to train all academic staff in competence-based methodology. He emphasized the importance of training academic leaders in competence-based education, which will have a twofold impact.

The workshop aimed to enhance the participants’ skills in pedagogy and professionalism, covering various courses including foundations of university pedagogy, competence-based curriculum, active-based learning, entrepreneurship, and emerging technologies.

The successful completion of Phase II of the Pedagogy and Professionalism Course marks a significant milestone in Makerere University’s quest to promote innovative teaching and learning. As the university looks to the future, it is clear that its academic staff are equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in an ever-evolving academic landscape.

By making the training compulsory for all academics, Makerere University aims to create a culture of continuous learning and professional development. This initiative will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the teaching and learning culture across the institution, ultimately benefiting students and the wider academic community.
