Entebbe, Uganda: In a move aimed at strengthening Uganda’s judiciary, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni presided over the swearing-in ceremony of nine newly appointed judges at State House, Entebbe. The new judges are expected to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the country’s justice system.
The ceremony marked a significant milestone in Uganda’s judiciary, with President Museveni emphasizing the crucial role the new judges will play in upholding the law and ensuring justice for all Ugandans. He also appealed for a justice system that aligns with Uganda’s cultural and historical context, stressing the need for a legal framework that reflects African traditions rather than relying solely on Western models.
The nine new judges sworn in include Hon. Justice Muzamiru Mutangula Kibeedi, who was appointed to the Supreme Court, and eight others who were appointed to the Court of Appeal: Hon. Justice Ssekaana Musa, Hon. Lady Justice Sabiiti Cornelia Kakooza, Hon. Lady Justice Stella Alibateese, Hon. Lady Justice Florence Nakachwa, Hon. Justice Byaruhanga Jesse Rugyema, Hon. Justice John Mike Musisi, Hon. Lady Justice Ketrah Kitariisibwa Katunguka, and Hon. Lady Justice Nambayo Esta.
President Museveni noted that the appointments are part of the government’s efforts to strengthen the judiciary and ensure that justice is delivered efficiently and effectively. He also emphasized the importance of the judiciary in promoting economic growth and development, particularly in resolving commercial disputes.
The Chief Justice, His Lordship Alfonse Owiny-Dollo, welcomed the new judges and praised President Museveni for fulfilling his commitment to strengthening the judiciary. He noted that the increase in the number of judges will enhance efficiency in delivering justice and enable the judiciary to convene multiple constitutional panels simultaneously, ensuring faster resolution of petitions.
The Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Hon. Norbert Mao, expressed his gratitude to President Museveni for enabling the delivery of justice through the increase in the number of judicial officers. He noted that the judiciary plays a pivotal role in stimulating the economy and urged the new judges to focus on delivering impartial justice to the people.
The swearing-in ceremony was attended by various dignitaries, including Hon. Jackson Kafuuzi, the Deputy Attorney General, and Gen. David Muhoozi, the Minister of State for Internal Affairs, as well as family members of the newly appointed judges.
The appointments are expected to have a significant impact on Uganda’s justice system, enhancing its efficiency and effectiveness in delivering justice to all Ugandans.
