Kampala, Uganda: In partnership with Ministry of ICT and National Guidance, NITA-U, Liquid Intelligent Technology, Association of Microfinance Institutions of Uganda and Defenders Protection Initiative, Milima Security has launched the Cyber Security Awareness Month, a global initiative promoting public-private conversations on cyber security, with the theme “Secure Our World.” This month-long initiative aims to build resilience and reduce cyber attacks through awareness and education, addressing the significant impact of cybercrime in Uganda, where over 15n were lost in 2023.
According to Emmanuel Chagara, CEO of Milima Security, cyber attacks are often the result of weak controls, emphasizing the importance of awareness training and education in helping the public appreciate the threats and respond accordingly.
Beyond financial losses, Chagara highlights the broader implications of cyber attacks, including damage to credibility and reputation.
The initiative has the support of the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance, with Assistant Commissioner E-services Michael Ocero stressing the importance of cyber security in securing transactions and systems.
The government has established 441 computer labs in schools focusing on cyber security and invested in innovation hubs developing secure software applications.
Throughout the month, Milima Security and partners will host various activities, including:- Cyber Security Skills Trainings , Webinars and Twitter spaces for young individuals and professionals to address skills gaps.
Empowering Women in Cyber Security; Focusing on increasing representation in the field, where women currently make up only 9% of the African workforce.
Financial Sector Securing; Conversations around security for tier four financial sector institutions, such as Saccos, fintechs, and microfinance institutions.
Eastcon Conference; A lot culmination event on October 31, bringing together stakeholders from across East Africa to discuss strategies for combating cyber threats.
By promoting awareness and education, Milima Security aims to reduce cyber attacks and build resilience in Uganda’s digital landscape.
