The launch of the CN Sugar Factory in Kifuyo, Namayingo district, by Vice President Jessica Alupo, demonstrates the government’s support for the establishment of a sugar mill in the area. The Vice President expressed her pleasure with the investment by CN Sugar Company during the launch ceremony on Friday, August 9, 2024.
The launch ceremony, which took place at the company site in Kifuyo trading center, Buyinja Sub county, marked the first mega-investment in Namayingo district. The factory’s construction has been a long-awaited development for the community, and its launch triggered jubilation throughout the district.
In her speech, delivered by the 3rd Deputy Prime Minister, Hajjat Rukia Isanga Nakadama, the Vice President congratulated the community of Namayingo on attracting such a significant investor. She described those who frustrate investors as “fraudsters and enemies of development” and urged them to reform or face consequences.
Vice President Alupo also encouraged CN Sugar to explore other opportunities in Namayingo, citing the district’s rich mineral resources, including white lake sand used in glass production. She advised small-scale landholders to focus on other crops, leaving sugarcane production to those with larger landholdings.
Leaders in Namayingo district, including Chairperson Ronald Sanya, Woman MP Hon Margret Makoha, and Namayingo South County legislator Hon Odwori Micheal Odwori, commended the government for supporting the CN sugar mill. They pledged to mobilize support for President Yoweri Museveni and the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party.
“Our dear Vice President, we are overjoyed today. It’s a remarkable day for the people of Namayingo,” said Sanya. “We have faced many hurdles to have CN sugar factory here. The people you see around are now ready to vote for President Museveni in the forthcoming general election, as they now have an alternative source of employment.”
Resident District Commissioner David Kulaba expressed relief that the factory’s construction was finally underway. “I was deployed here by President Museveni to promote development, not to suffocate it,” he said. “I am extremely happy that we have had the construction launched. Namayingo people, I want to see you employed, as jobs reduce the burden of criminality.”
Namit Patel, the proprietor of CN Sugar Factory, thanked President Yoweri Museveni for allowing them to invest in Uganda. He revealed that they have invested close to $35 million and plan to employ over 2000 local people. Patel requested an expedited operational license to commence production as soon as possible.
