Uganda’s Minister of Information, Communications, Technology and National Guidance, Chris Baryomunsi, has issued a stern warning to a group of young individuals who are planning to stage a protest on July 23, termed the “March to Parliament,” to denounce corruption and the misappropriation of public funds by parliamentarians.
Baryomunsi emphasized that the government, in collaboration with security forces, will not sanction the protest, asserting that there exist alternative channels through which the youth can effectively convey their grievances without resorting to street demonstrations.
“Uganda operates differently from Kenya, and vice versa. Instead of opting for protests, they should explore other avenues,” remarked Baryomunsi.
Despite the government’s stance, the organizers of the protest have vowed to proceed with their planned march, urging the police to ensure their safety during the demonstration.
Earlier this week, police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke acknowledged the circulation of posters and flyers on social media platforms inviting people to participate in the march to Parliament on July 23, clarifying that the event has not received official approval.
“We have observed organizers using social media to mobilize individuals towards Parliament. While we respect the constitutional rights to peaceful assembly and demonstration, we are also mindful of potential malicious intents by certain elements seeking to exploit these activities,” stated Rusoke.
This development coincides with a period where young Kenyans are utilizing digital platforms to organize and express dissent against their government.
