The two suspects only identified as Karim R. and E. Muvawala were arrested on Monday, 1st July, 2024 and have been detained for violation of EIA conditions.
The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has arrested two employees of a Turkish Company for backfilling Lwajali wetland in Gongobe Village, Goma Division, Sseeta Parish, Mukono district.
The suspects who work for Turkish Company, YAMAN CONSTRUCTION Ltd were found backfilling Lwajali wetland just opposite the main gate of Seeta High School, along the Kampala Mukono Highway.
According to NEMA, YAMAN CONSTRUCTION Ltd, a Concrete Products Manufacturing Factory was issued an EIA certificate number, NEMA/EIA/18516 on 14th June 2024 in accordance with the NEA No.5 of 2019 for concrete manufacturing.
However, this company has violated the NEMA provisions by backfilling the wetland.
Backfilling a wetland is a crime under the NEA, No.5 of 2019 and a person who contravenes subsection (1) commits an offence and is liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding thirty thousand currency points or imprisonment not exceeding twelve years or both.
