Museveni has appointed former Assistant Inspector General of Police Abbas Byakagaba as the new Inspector General of Police.
He takes over from Okoth Ochola who retired in March, 2024.
“I confirm that H.E. the President and Commander in Chief of the UPDF has today appointed Mr. Abbas Byakagaba as the new Inspector General of Police replacing IGP Martin Okoth Ochola,” said the Deputy Presidential Spokesperson, Farouk Kirunda on Friday night.
“Other changes have been effected in the Uganda Police Force,” he added.
Maj Gen Geoffrey Katsigazi Tumusiime has been holding fort since Ochola’s exit.
ChimpReports understands Katsigazi was not considered for IGP over the manner in which he has been handling several high profile crime investigations.
Byakagaba previously served as commander of Kampala Metropolitan Police.
He also headed police’s counter terrorism docket, a position that saw him lead specialised and high risk operations against Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) extremists.
Byakagaba’s appointment was a surprise considering that he recently retired from the police force.
