At least 91 people died in crime-related incidents during the Easter holidays, authorities said.
Police said on Tuesday that between March 29 and April 1, at least 45 of the people mentioned above died in traffic accidents, while the other deaths occurred from stabbing murders, electrocution, shooting murders, drowning , suicide, sudden death and murder by mob action. among others.
Police spokesperson Fred Enanga revealed that a total of 62 serious incidents were reported to the police during the period, compared to 44 incidents recorded during the Easter holidays in 2023.
“Murder by mob was the most committed crime with 10 cases recorded, followed by aggravated robbery with 9 cases, while murder resulting from aggravated domestic violence recorded 4 cases among others,” Enanga told reporters in Kampala.
He added: “During the Easter festive season, 46 lives were lost but 52 suspects were arrested, including criminals who were terrorizing people in Kito, Mabanda Cell, Matugga Ward, Gombe Division and Nansana Municipality in Wakiso District.”
Police Traffic and Road Safety Directorate spokesperson Michael Kananura said that from March 28 to April 1, about 125 people were injured in traffic accidents.
“The Kampala metropolitan area contributed to the most accidents, followed by the Albertine and Wamala regions. The Directorate continues to carry out a series of campaigns and awareness raising on road safety to promote behavioral changes throughout the country,” Kananura emphasized.
“Of them, 89 did not have a driving license, 435 had an expired license, 257 were driving outside of class and five had falsified driving licenses,” he explained.
“The 89 offenders who were driving without a license were arrested and brought to court. A total of 329 drivers who drove beyond the prescribed limits were issued Speedy Penalty Scheme (EPS) fines,” he added.
The traffic police revealed that 1,019 drivers were arrested without helmets and issued EPS fines.
They were also tasked with producing protective helmets before their motorcycles were returned to them.
Kananura said such operations will be intensified even after the Easter season.
