Jane Muthoni from Eldoret has recounted a harrowing tale of betrayal and tragedy involving her eldest son, Jose, who confessed to the murder of his two brothers. She expresses an unfathomable sense of grief, asserting that Jose has effectively erased her family’s future.
Jane’s narrative begins with her life after high school when she entered into marriage and was blessed with three sons. Subsequently, she separated from her husband after he married another woman, whom he brought into the family fold. Leaving her first two sons with their aunt in the village, Jane took her youngest with her to Nairobi.
The first devastating blow occurred when Jane received a call from the village informing her that her second-born son had allegedly committed suicide while in form one. The circumstances surrounding the tragedy were perplexing, with Jane learning that he had been found hugging in the same house as his brother.
Upon completing form four, Jose joined his mother in Nairobi. It became apparent that he had developed a disturbing fascination with horror movies, finding enjoyment in scenes depicting murder and struggle. The ominous turn of events escalated when Jane’s first-born son, accompanied by the youngest, went out, only for the youngest to never return. Despite Jane’s attempts to reach them, the phone was switched off. When her firstborn returned alone the next day, he claimed to have told his brother to go back home at the bus station.
Devastated and fearing the worst, Jane reported the incident to the police. Her first-born son was arrested as he was the last person seen with his missing brother. During interrogation, he confessed to killing his brother and disposing of the body in a pit latrine. Shockingly, he also admitted to killing his other brother and hanging him.
Jane, grappling with disbelief and immense sorrow, underscores the impact on her mental health, describing her current state as one of depression. She laments that her son’s trial proceeded without her involvement, resulting in a five-year sentence—a punishment she deems inadequate for the gravity of his crimes. As a mother, she declares that forgiveness is beyond her reach in the face of such profound betrayal.
