The Diocese of Kumi is enveloped in mourning following the passing of the esteemed Rt. Rev. Thomas Edison IRIGEI, the first and retired Bishop (Bishop Emeritus) of the Diocese. This happened today morning of 5th/22/2023 at Soroti Main Hospital. The news was announced by Michael today expressing deep sorrow but also emphasizing the hope found in faith.
Rt. Rev. Thomas Edison IRIGEI’s lifelong journey in service to God and the church spanned various roles, from being a dedicated Christian and Lay Reader to serving as a chaplain, Parish Priest, Bishop of the Diocese of Kumi, and the former Provincial Dean of the Province of Church of Uganda. His commitment and ministry have left an indelible mark on the hearts of many.
In this time of sorrow, the thoughts and prayers of the entire body of Christ in the Diocese of Kumi extend to his family, especially Toto Jennifer, and to all who knew and respected Bishop IRIGEI.
His Grace, the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, The Most Rev Dr. Stephen Samuel Kazimba Mugalu, along with all the incumbent House of Bishops, Maamas, clergy, lay readers, and the wider Christian community in Uganda and the Diocese of Kumi & Teso, have been informed of his passing.
Plans for his final rites, in accordance with the traditions of the Church of Uganda, are underway. The approved burial program will be communicated following consultations with the family. The anticipated burial at St. Philip’s Cathedral Ngora is provisionally set for Monday, 11th December, allowing His Grace to officiate while honoring prior commitments.
Regrettably, due to prior engagements in consecrating and enthroning the 6th Bishop of the Diocese of Namirembe on Sunday, 10th December, Michael Kumi expressed heartfelt apologies and inability to attend. However, prayers and support from the community are earnestly welcomed during this difficult period.
Michael Kumi, representing the Diocese of Kumi, seeks divine strength, courage, and serenity for all in these trying times. The community welcomes prayers and participation in honoring the life and legacy of this revered son of Kumi, Uganda, and Christ.
