A Kenyan lady identified as Jane Awor, narrated how she suffered in and out of marriage after her husband and her immediate cousin decided to ruin her life. According to her, she was born and raised in a humble family, and she was taken to a good school.
Awor went ahead and joined the university to study law, and she believed that she was not supposed to have a boyfriend until she was done with school. In college, he met a man. After college, they decided to get married, and the man went to visit her family.
He went ahead and paid the dowry, did a church wedding in 2012, and her in-laws were so much in love with her, not knowing that was a red flag. They went on a honeymoon, and that night the man told her that he was not ready to have children since he was financially unstable, and she agreed.
After one week into the marriage, they started a disagreement after he failed to pay the house rent and his friend offered to help him. After going back home, he stayed at home for one day and left for his businesses, and he would come back after one week, leaving her with very little money.
Awor had to live in marriage because her father was a bishop, and she wanted to be a good example. Her father sponsored her husband to start a business, which became very successful, but she was not helping her in any way.
He also didn’t want her to work, and she started working behind his back on matters to do with the law. After some time, they could not get children, and she went to the hospital, and after tests, she was very okay.
The man was against her, and he said she could not get a child because she was very fat without caring how she would feel. After some time, he even stopped eating her food, and they started living like rivals in the house.
Awor later started going to her friend’s house, and she shared everything with her about how hard life was for her.
One day Awor decided to leave the marriage, and he told her, and he was okay with it. She called her mother, who told her to go to her spiritual mother, which she did.
He was called, and they underwent a counselling session. He said she should go to her mother’s home, and he would go for her when he was ready.
He took her to her parents and left without talking to anyone. After two weeks, her mother sent her outside to prepare tea, and she heard footsteps. She saw her cousin, who poured her acid on her face, and her clothes were just flaming. She was taken to the hospital, but it was too late since it had already affected her face.
Her cousin was arrested while running away to Tanzania, and later it was known that her ex-husband had paid him to destroy her life, of which she had burned 40%.
She stayed in the hospital for one year and four months. She is therefore calling upon ladies to avoid abusive marriage, and she has opened an organisation where she is helping ladies with skills to better their own lives and be financially stable.
