By Charles katabalwa/ CENTRAL UGANDA REPORTER.
KAMPALA: Caritas Uganda in Conjunction with Caritas Denmark and Community Integrated Development Initiative (CIDI) have come together to teach younger people the need to protect environment.
They have visited two schools including St Stephens Church of Uganda Primary school Bbiina and St James primary school Bbiina both in Nakawa Division were they have taught pupils the dangers of climate change as well as the importance of environment conservation, they planted trees and held debate on environment conservation between St Stephens Church of Uganda Primary school Bbiina and Niels Steensen Junior School from Denmark.
While addressing journalists at Bbiina in Nakawa Division Rev Fr Daniel Norgaard the Chaplain of Niels Steensen Junior School in Copenhagen Denmark revealed that conserving environment is important for social and economic development of any society and is the reason why they come together to teach young pupils because it helps them to grow up understanding the need to protect environment.
“it’s only environment conservation which can end global warming as well as problems related to nature destruction such as floods, hunger among others” revealed Fr Daniel.
In the one week long program over *200* trees are going to be planted.
Recently President Yoweri Museveni ordered land encroachers to get out of wetlands before government forcefully evicts them because they are the reason for the unreliable rain falls which also affects irrigation schemes and environment.
Sylvia Nakanyike the coordinator of *Uganda Governance and Poverty Alleviation Program (UGOPAP)* at Caritas Uganda said that Ugandan government has put different innervations to stop environment destruction put little efforts have been made to implement them effectively and some times are selective were so called people are left freely even if are destroying environment and has worsened the situation in Uganda.
She has thanked CIDI and Caritas Denmark for such good initiative which going to empower younger people with knowledge to conserve environment and environment conservation is everyone’s responsibility as per Sustainable development Goal (SDG) goal 13.
She calls upon government to do more in conserving environment.
In the same way Hellen Kasujja the Deputy Director CIDI said that conversation of environment does not at any way affect development as is said by people who destroy environment.
She adds that both Uganda and Africa at large are the list emitters of green house gases and the people most affected because things like floods, climate change, land slides among others and this make Uganda venerable because Uganda has limited ability to coup with effects of those problems of weather changes.
“Creating awkwardness among younger learners will help to prevent climate change” Kasujja concluded.
