Alex Tumushabe Bruce, a 32-year-old lay reader serving at Ibugwe Church of Uganda in Kihanga Archdeaconry, Diocese of Kigezi, and Enid Abampiire Niwabiine, a 33-year-old mother of four married to Wilber Niwabiina, and a resident of Omukishenyi village in Ibumba Parish, Rwamucucu sub-county of Rukiga District, both took their UCE exams at Kihanga Secondary School.
Tumushabe, married to Shifrah Kiconco and blessed with three children, hails from Nyakihanda Village, Kahungye Parish, Kahungye Sub County in Ndorwa West County of Kabale District. Having dropped out of school in 2012 during senior four, he began his service as a lay reader in the church.
Today, he shared with our reporter that the decision to sit for UCE exams was driven by the realization that a certificate is a prerequisite for pursuing theology studies in the Diocese of Kigezi. Despite the challenges as the head of the family, Tumushabe expressed plans to advance to A’ level pending favorable exam results.

Abampiire, a mother of four, residing in Omukishenyi village, Ibumba Parish, Rwamucucu sub-county of Rukiga District, made the decision to return to studies after a 15-year hiatus from school. Financial constraints led her to drop out in Senior Four, and she highlighted the myriad challenges she faced without a UCE certificate.

Rukundo Onesmus Rurihoona, the head teacher of Kihanga Secondary School, revealed that they registered five married students for UCE exams, including Enid Abampiire Niwabiine and Alex Tumushabe Bruce.
The other three candidates are Amos Harerimana, a lay reader from Kisoro district; Confidence Nkamushaba, a single mother; and Arinda Rinah Bridget, divorced. Rurihoona commended the discipline of the students and expressed optimism in their ability to perform well.

Out of the total 150 registered candidates, 149 sat for the exams, with only one candidate, Savior Natukunda (registration number 146), failing to appear for the exams.
