Politicians have been urged to promote national unity rather than tribalism or nepotism.
Speaking to journalists in Kampala, the Deputy Resident City Commissioner (RCC) of Rubaga Division, Anderson Burora, said politicians should focus on issues of development and integration in their messaging.
His comments come in reaction to allegations of divisive language used by National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, during a recent visit to Luweero district.
Videos circulating online document Kyagulanyi accusing President Museveni’s government of attempting to kill him. He also reportedly advised the Baganda ethnic group to fight for their lands.
In the wake of these remarks, Kyagulanyi has faced accusations of hate speech and stoking tribal tensions.
Burora warns that such rhetoric can seriously endanger national cohesion, especially as politicians ramp up public rallies ahead of Uganda’s upcoming general election.
He urged young people to carefully examine the messages put forth by political candidates before lending their support. Politicians, Burora stressed, should promote integration rather than play on ethnic divisions.
