The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has collected UGX 29 million in fines from a smuggler transporting concealed goods on a Gateway Company bus.
Customs officers at the URA Central Bus Terminal intercepted bus registration number UBM743T after receiving a tip about a hidden compartment. When buses arrive, drivers submit cargo manifests which are checked against seals and documents.
During inspection of the Gateway bus, Satellite Station Supervisor Arthur Musinguzi “purposefully searched for the hidden area and uncovered over 1,000kg of smuggled cargo.” Confiscated items included 307 rolls of fabric, 203 garments, food items, and dodged import duties totaling over UGX 29 million.
Separately, a non-intrusive scanner detected a hidden electric motorcycle disguised as spare parts on a consignment. URA spokesperson Ibrahim Bbossa emphasized the technology’s role in thorough inspections compared to physical checks alone.
Under the EAC Customs Management Act, concealment offenses carry up to 5 years’ imprisonment or half the applicable duty. Bbossa stressed URA’s commitment to protecting the economy, security and health through trade compliance.
