The Uganda Prisons Service has reported that three prisoners were injured in a crash between a prison bus and a logging truck in Mityana district on August 31, 2023.
Prisons spokesperson Frank Baine provided details of the incident in a statement. He said the crash occurred at around 5:00pm as the prison bus was returning from court duties.
A Tata truck carrying logs and registered as UAV 066x collided with the prison bus, registration number UG 0344U, in Mityana Town, according to Baine. The impact forced the bus off the road.
Baine stated that while there were no fatalities, three prisoners sustained minor injuries and received treatment at Mityana Prison.
Police have taken over the investigation and removal of the vehicles, which were towed to Mityana Police Station to be examined.
The truck’s owner fled the scene but police are still searching for them, according to Racheal Kawala, spokesperson for Wamala Police region.
This crash comes after a deadly collision last year that killed five inmates. In May 2022, a prison truck transporting 54 inmates and 12 officers was rammed by a Toyota Wish car after its tire burst in Luwero district. The truck overturned, claiming five lives. Police are still investigating the cause of that accident as well.
