A 30-year-old man who attempted to kill his 70-year-old mother, for the fourth time has fled the village.
Amos Opio, a resident of Kabuki village, in Malongo sub-county in Mayuge district, allegedly locked his mother Florence Asio inside her bedroom on Thursday and torched the house.
Residents broke into the house and managed to save Asio before the fire could spread to other parts of the house. Realizing that, his mother was still alive, Opio fled into hiding, raising suspicion from residents who alerted the police.
Asio said that all her other four children passed away, leaving her with 13 grandchildren to care of but now Opio was forcing her to sell the family land. Asio further said that last year she gave part of the land to Opio, which he sold but returned to claim more, a request she rejected.
She said that prior to this incident, Opio destroyed both the coffee and banana plantations, which were the only source of income for school fees for the grandchildren. According to Asio, a clan meeting was convened and Opio warned against threatening his mother. Asio adds that the land is their only source of livelihood.
“For the past 20 years, I have been tilling this land for not only food but to also raise tuition fees, pay medical bills and other necessities for my grandchildren, therefore, I cannot give it up to someone who already acquired his portion of inheritance and sold it off,” Asio said.
Iduma Baisi, a resident in the area says that this is the fourth time they have rescued Asio from being killed by Opio. Busoga East police spokesperson, Diana Nandawula says that inquiries are underway.
