SWITZERLAND: Uganda’s Minister of Gender Labour and Social Development, Hon. Amongi Betty Akena has called on Africa Group to prioritise growth of the informal sector if the continent is to close the gaps in inequality.
Speaking in her Capacity as the Chairperson of The Africa Union STC committee at the Global World of Work Summit this Morning in Geneva, Amongi stressed that it is not governments that grows the economy, rather, it is labour, capital and other factors of production which fuels the path of growth; Private sectors should therefore be facilitated by government with good policies that allows them to formalise their businesses.
She called on developed economies and international financing institutions to provide long-term capital loans to support the government for social services like education, health, water, and empowerment of the vulnerable groups.
The world should encourage balanced growth, fair trade, and inclusive development through social spending targeting the LDC countries if we are to achieve Shared Prosperity, Amongi noted.
She called on Africa countries to build a coalition of the willing to fight the battle of African economic unity by facilitating frameworks to stimulate trade within the continent. H.E President RUTO and Prime Minister of Barbados addressed the Summit this morning.
