Luwero, Central Uganda: At least four guns have been confiscated in Luwero town council as Police launch an operation to enforce directives to stop one deployments of security guards on private installations.
The operation follows attacks on private security guards which have left one dead and guns stolen.
The recent robbery attack happened on Wednesday this week at Hegan Police Station along Kampala – Gulu highway. Unknown thugs attacked the petrol station at night and robbed cash from the supermarket, beat up the guard and took away his gun which they later dropped on the road.
The other attack occurred early this month when an assailant raided Advance Smart Micro Finance located in Modern Zone in Wobulenzi town. The assailant shot dead the 20-year-old guard, identified as Leone Odongo attached at SGA Security Company and made off with his firearm.
Living Twazagye, the Luwero District Police Commander explains that private security companies put the lives of the guards at risk when they deploy one person who can’t fight back when attacked.
Twazagye said that the Inspector General of Police issued guidelines and ordered them to deploy at least two guards but some had defied them.
Twazagye says that as result they have embarked on operations to enforce the directives and so far four guns from lone security guards deployed in different private installations within Luwero town have been impounded till their companies meet the guidelines.
Police however withheld the identities of security companies found with lone guards saying they will name and shame them after the ongoing operation.
Richard Bwabye the Luwero Resident District Commissioner says that the Security companies have no alternative but to deploy at least two guards or else stop deployments
