Bugema, University: Uganda’s Vice President Rtd. Maj. Jessica Alupo on Sunday praised Bugema University for putting emphasis in teaching science and technology related programmes as well interesting themselves in doing research in different spheres.
H.E Alupo made this revelation while officiating at the 28th Graduation Ceremony of Bugema University- a function that was held at University’s Main Campus in Kiwenda, Luwero District.
Important to note.
A total of 1176 students were awarded honors in different academic disciplines.
Females were 532 contributing to 45.2% of graduates and Males were 644 contributing to 54.8%.
Masters had 80, Post Graduate Diploma had 11, Bachelor’s Degree had 275 and 406 for Certificate.
She stated that Uganda’s government is committed to promoting science and technology and will always make a call to all institutions of higher learning to promote that.
“It is important to note that science and technology is the center of gravity in the development of any nation including Uganda”. VP Alupo.
“I have been assured that Bugema University is currently conducting fundamental ground-breaking science research. I encourage you to keep it up because its one way of making University education relevant”. She added.
Alupo alluded to the fact that ‘this is a good trend and one sure way we can promote meaningful development and transformation of our country.
Representing Minister of Education, Moriku Kaducu the state minister for Primary Education implored graduates to serve the nation with integrity and excellence and to use the time spent at the University to shape their next journey.
She appealed to graduates to work around the knowledge acquired at the University to tap into opportunities they come across and use them to create jobs not to be seekers.
Mrs. Kaducu went on to encourage them to further their studies putting emphasis on getting new skills citing that studying and learning is a continuous process.
“To the University and graduates, i seek you to embrace the 21st Century teaching and learning which calls for skilled workforce”. She stated.
Associate Prof. Paul Katamba the Vice Chancellor of the University clung to graduates to choose challenges over comfort.
Prof. Katamba assured graduates that its only when they will accept to take on challenges that they’ll at the end emerge victors. He mentioned this referring to various challenges they’re set to meet in the field of work they’ve headed to today.
To the government, he informed the Vice President that the University has erected a science complex and they seek for government support to have it complete for them to be able to train scientists.
He added that they also have a hospital in the same locality aimed at realizing the vision of the university which being a science and technology institution.
Prof. Katamba however stressed that the two facilities lack sufficient equipment yet the university cannot manage to satisfy them in its capacity and it is against this background that he sought for government’s direct intervention to have this in place for smooth running of their activities.
About of the University.
Bugema University (BU) is a private, co-educational Ugandan university affiliated with the Seventh-day Adventist Church. It is a part of the Seventh-day Adventist education system, the world’s second largest Christian school system.
The institution started in 1948 as a training school for teachers and pastors for the Seventh-day Adventist Church in East Africa.
At that time it was called Bugema Missionary Training School. Later, the name changed to Bugema Missionary College and then to Bugema Adventist College.
The university is on land that measures 640 acres (1.00 sq mi), in Kalagala sub-county, Bamunanika county, Luweero District in the Central Region of Uganda.
The main campus is approximately 33 kilometres (21 mi), by road, northeast of Kampala, Uganda’s capital and largest city.
It is approximately 18.1 kilometres (11 mi), by road, south of the town of Ziroobwe, on the Gayaza–Ziroobwe Road.
The coordinates of Bugema University campus are 0°34’11.0″N, 32°38’31.0″E (Latitude:0.569722; Longitude:32.641944).
